The goods on display at Argostoli's markets give you a peek into the locals' lives. Edible items are sold aplenty in the market. Fresh seafood, olive oil, honey, excellent wine and fruit tempt you at the market stalls. You can definitely carry back a few things to spice up your meals back home or if you just can't wait, visit one of Kefalonia's restaurants and enjoy this wonderful cuisine.

Lithostratos Street, which is a pedestrian street, has shops and cafes lining either side. The shops remain open six days in a week. Afternoon breaks are taken from 2 pm to 5pm. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays shops close shutters at 3 pm. However, shops meant for catering to tourists' requirements are every day of the week, and are open to much later in the night too.

Tourists do not generally get blatantly ripped off at souvenir shops as the Greeks seem to be keen on fair trade practises. Goods range from tacky to classy and the prices adequately reflect the quality. As with any other waterfront towns several restaurants, tavernas, bakeries and stalls selling fresh fruits and vegetable do brisk business in Argostoli. Greek meze (small dips and fish) and other typical Greek dishes can be sampled here.

Argostoli is an economic hub and an important centre for politics and cultural activities in Kefalonia. 14,000 residents stay in this bustling town. When your feet tire of roaming the shops you can relax at one of the many cafes and watch people going about their jobs. A lot of activity is centred at the Belltower café on Livostroto.
