Meet Your Local Connection
Meet Nestoras Gioulatos, the owner and director of Carpe Diem. Nestoras was born in Kefalonia in 1977, and initially started in the tourism industry when he was 11 in one of the first hotels in the town of Lixouri. At first it was only a part-time job as an assistant in order to raise money to buy a saxophone, but he continued working in the service sector at different restaurants, bars and hotels during his summers. He loved communicating in English and meeting new people from around the world.
When the time came for him to enter his university, he wasn't sure what exactly he wanted to study. He initially was going to enter Greek University to study Physics and Chemistry, but then changed his decision after discussing with the Cephalonia Palace Hotel manager, a long time family friend. He persuaded Nestoras to pursue a career in tourism. The thought hadn't crossed Nestoras' mind to study tourism, because of the solitary fact that he found it so enjoyable, but then he realized it was so fun because he truly liked every aspect of it!
After this, he pursued his dream and finished with honors with a BA degree in Travel & Tourism Management in Northumbria University at Newcastle.
Company History
After briefly joining the Greek Army, Nestoras then worked in Athens for Bluestar Ferries. However, he couldn't see the point in working in a place like Athens where he was spending most of his free time in traffic. He decided he wanted to return to Kefalonia and found an opportunity in a well-established incoming tourism company. However, after working there a full season, he decided that he had enough experience to start his own business.
"That was it. I took all the money I had and I invested it to start my own travel agency, so that I could do things my way."
